New Year 2009
Last updated by Karla on 1/12/2009 10:08:41 AM

From December 30 to January 4 we went to Merillan, Wisconsin, to spend some relaxing time at a friend's cabin.

Tuesday, December 30

The drive there took 8.5 hrs. As we crossed Missouri, Iowa and Minnesota, the roads were clear. As soon as we got in Wisconsin, we encountered snow, which slowed us down a bit.

Wednesday, December 31

After breakfast, Hector and Karla went for a walk around the block with Ian, Leah, and Liz. On the way back, we walked on the frozen lake, which was a first for both of us.

(this next picture shows trees chewed by deer)

Is it really safe??? Ian seems to think so.

Awaiting the New Year, we had dinner, dessert, and played games. We then each had 12 grapes to receive the new year.

 !

Thursday, January 1

Hector and Leah went snow showing to Castle Mound.

We did a lot of birdwatching. We saw mostly chickadees, junkos and blue jays coming to the bird feeder outside the cabin. There was a squirrel that claim ownership of that tree and fought with the blue jays. It was quite a show to see it leap after the birds!

Hector went for walks and saw ice fishing and some deer.

Sunday, Jan 4

We drove back. North Iowa was full of vehicles in the ditch (we counted at least 30, including 3 semis), so it took us more than 10 hours to get back home. Hector is a great driver!
