Monday, August 11/ Lunes 11 de agosto
We woke up early, took the bus to Montparnasse, and from there, the train to Chartres. We arrived there around noon, had lunch at Le Pichet and then walked to the Cathedral. This medieval cathedral (completed in 1260) is the most amazing, beautiful, and detailed we have seen. It is also big. In addition to the stained glass and rose windows and vaulted ceilings, columns, humongous organ, and endless niches and sculptures, Chartres also has a choir screen, which is like filigree on stone (just enlarge the pictures to get a taste). After admiring the inside of the church and trying to capture it with our cameras, we went up the "new" tower (early 16th century) to get views of the country. Back on the ground, we visited the impressive north portico and took many more pictures there too.
After seing the town's shopping area we discovered the old part of town (Rue Chantault had 12th century houses) and walked around there, by the river Eure, until it was time to get back to Paris in the last train. Back in Paris, we went to Le Boucheron, an Italian restaurant near the hotel, for dinner.
