Pittsburgh Trip 2004

This was our first trip during 2004. Our vacation to Pittsburgh was full of surprises. Not neccessarily nice surprises :) but all in all we had a good time.

Friday (November 5th)
Surprise #1. On Friday morning my fligh to Pittsburgh was cancelled due to mechanical problems with the plane. I had to take a different flight and ended up getting there more than 4 hours late. It was a good thing that Karla was busy on her training session.
Once I got to Pittsburgh, Karla and I went to the Strip District. The shops were closed, but we got to see what ended up being one of the funniest scenes at Pittsburgh: a mexican store that advertise themselves (in Spanglish) as "groceria mexicana" which means something like "mexican swearword" in Spanish
Viernes 5 de noviembre
El vuelo de Hector se cancelo por ciertos problemas con el avion y Hector tuvo que tomar otro vuelo cuatro horas mas tarde. Karla ya estaba en Pittsburgh en una conferencia
Cuando Hector llego a Pittsburgh y Karla termino con la conferencia, ambos nos fuimos al Strip District, donde las tiendas ya habian cerrado, pero donde nos toco ver un anuncio en la pared para una tiendita mexicana. Se anunciaban como Groceria Mexicana en lugar de tienda mexicana.
Saturday (November 6th)
Our plan for Saturday was to go to downtown, book a room in a different hotel (since our previous reservation only included Friday night) and spend the rest of the day touring around Pittsburgh's downtown area.
Here is our surprise #2. Little we knew about game day. The Pittsburgh Steelers were playing home on Sunday and all hotels were booked around the downtown area and everything else 20 miles around. We spend Saturday morning making phone calls to all hotels, and driving around looking for hotels with rooms available.
Sabado 6 de noviembre
Nuestro plan era pasarnos el sabado en el centro, turisteando, y hallar un hotel cerca del centro (el hotel donde estabamos vencia al mediodia y no tenian cuartos disponibles.
Pero no contabamos conque el equipo de futbol americano (los acereros) jugaban en casa el domingo y todos los hoteles de Pittsbugh estaban a reventar. Nos pasamos todo el sabado llamando a hoteles cerca y lejos, y terminamos manejando por horas tratando de hallar cualquier cuarto (habiamos rentado un carro)
So, after staying at the Wyndham on Friday night we ended up staying at a Motel 6 in Cranberry (PA) about 20 miles from downtown Pittsburgh...gotta love those football fans :)
Finalmente, despues de muchas horas, hallamos un cuarto en el Motel 6 a unos 20 minutos de Pittsburgh. Basta ver las fotos para comparar el Hotel Wyndham donde habiamos estado el viernes para notar la diferencia
Anyway...once we found a hotel room we went to the "furniculars." This was a lot of fun. The little trains are very nice and you can get a really nice view of Pittsburgh downtown from here. We were lucky enough to get window view at the Restaurant that we went to after riding the furnicular.
Una vez que conseguimos el cuarto nos fuimos al centro, a buscar los carros-cable, trenecitos que te llevan a lo alto de un cerrito donde hay restaurantes y se puede ver todo Pittsburgh desde ahi. Cenamos en un restaurant con vista a la ciudad y al pie de tres rios
After dinner we went back to downtown...
Despues de la cena nos fuimos a manejar y caminar por el centro
and we got into one of those late night cabaret shows.

Sunday (November 7th)
And here comes our surprise #3. Sunday morning we thought of visiting some of the museums on the north shore. Well, the football stadium is just next door to these two museums and all the parking places were sold out. We couldn't believe it. We could not get into the museums because there was no place to park!
The tailgating before the game was a great scene, though. People bar-b-queing, drinking, and just having fun all around the stadium, which means, literaly, under the bridges, around the museums, and everywhere where they could park.
Domingo 7 de noviembre
La mañana del domingo pensabamos visitar museos en la parte norte de la ciudad, pero no pudimos porque montones de gente estaban en los alrededores del estadio, esperando a que el partido empezara... y para matar tiempo, cocinaban, bailaban, acampaban en las calles. Los museos habian cerrado para rentar los estacionamientos.
So here we go again to the Strip District. We found a nice little diner and had lunch there.

After that we toured around the Strip District and downtown areas one last time.

On our way to the airport we stop at IKEA. This was
probably certainly Karla's favorite spot.
De ida al aeropuerto (teniamos tiempo de sobra) nos paramos en la supertienda IKEA, famosa en EU y que vende muebles y cosas de casa a buenos precios
