Seattle/2003
September 3-7, 2003
It took us almost 3 years to go visit our friend Eric after he moved to Seattle. But we finally did it. We had a great time there. Eric and Wendy are great hosts and the city is full of things to do. Of the five days we were there, it only drizzled in one of them.
Wednesday
The first place we visited when we got there was the Pike Market. What a wonderful place, full of flowers, fish, people, fruits, shops, and places to eat!
Thursday
On Thursday we went to see the Ballard Locks. These locks are used to allow the flow of boats from fresh water (Lake Washington) to salt water (Pudge Sound.)
Hector was completely amazed on how cool these things are and that they work on such a simple principle: gravity. There are no pumps or other source of power to fill the locks with water.
(more pictures of the locks coming soon)
We also saw a "fish-ladder" that was built to allow the Salmon coming from the Pacific Ocean go into the Lake Washington to breed. We could see the Salmon swiming upstream and jumping. Faboulous!
On our way back we walked on Market Avenue (on Ballard.) The port feeling of Seattle reminded us a little bit to Manzanillo (Colima.) We stopped at an Italian place to have appetizers and beer...as it turned out those "appetizers" were actually our dinner :)
Friday
We woke up late and went to have lunch with Eric to the Pike Market. He took us to a famous place (Ivar's) for fish n' chips.
After lunch we stopped in the fire department right by the water and Eric asked the fire fighters if they could give us a tour of one of the boats that they use to put out fires in the sea. We walked inside the Chief Seattle boat, saw the engines, controls, and the cabin.

Then we went back to the Pike Market to visit the three floors of shops. There are shops for every imaginable thing in there: book, crafts, magic, antiques, arts, collectibles, posters, you name it, it's there.
Later in the afternoon we went to the Pioneer Square. We got there late and most of the shops were already closing, but we got into a nice antique shop. Hector had to drag Karla out of this shop before they kicked us out for staying after hours :)
Saturday
On Saturday we took the ferry to Bainbridge Island. On our way to the island we could see better Seattle's skyline. We took a couple of pictures of this.

We had lunch in the island and then we headed to a winery. We tasted no less than 4 wines each of us -- that's right, that is 16 drinks, but each of them very small :)

At night we went back to Eric's home and had Thai for dinner. After that we watched the extended version of Lord of the Rings (LOTR). As it turned out both Eric and Karla are LOTR freaks.
Sunday
Sunday morning we went to Snoqualmie Falls. On our way to the falls we saw the other side of Seattle: the mountains. We drove for about 45 minutes to get there.
There wasn't as much water on the falls as in other months since it hadn't rained in Seattle for almost 3 months (imagine that!) but they were still beautiful. We walked down to the foot of the falls were we actually could feel their breeze.
Karla had a hard time walking back up from the falls to the car. She is getting to much used to our lovely flat Missouri.

On the afternoon we went to see the Space Needle. Hector couldn't leave Seattle without going to its observatory. He had a personal trauma since he couldn't see the needle for the first two days we were there (perhaps he needs new glasses.)

For dinner we went to a fancy restaurant (Elliot's) with Eric and Wendy. The food was wonderful.
Monday
We barely saw Mt. Rainier while we were at Seattle, but we got this great shot of it during our flight back.
